Community Book Gardens increase the flow of culturally and linguistically relevant books into the home so that families build their own libraries and develop a monthly routine of bringing books into their households. When Book Stands in neighborhood hubs are stocked with books that reflect local people and places, book sharing and conversation begins to buzz throughout the community.

Flow of Books

Libraries, schools, foundations, and nonprofit organizations can all play a part in making sure every child has sustained access to an abundance of relevant books, both print and digital. For instance, weekly or monthly book mailings and literacy-support by text messaging are measurable, sustainable ways to reach every family.

Community-based Distribution

Community Stewards are key to making the flow of books into the home a valued and dependable routine. Teachers, librarians, and volunteers manage Book Stands in open-access settings for children such as healthcare clinics, grocery stores, and local businesses. Books are refreshed regularly, based on frequency and volume of families visiting the book stand. Pop-Up Book Stands at local events, such as family literacy nights, book fairs, and street festivals are another way to grow home libraries.
