Being Bilingual
Speaking multiple languages at home can benefit children in many ways. Being bilingual is more than knowing two sets of words. It allows children to connect with family members, traditions, and communities in meaningful ways. When families speak their home language together, they can connect more deeply with their history and feel part of something bigger. Language becomes a bridge between generations.
During the early years of life, children’s brains are especially receptive to language. Hearing two different languages supports brain development and helps create a strong sense of identity. Caregivers encourage language learning by reading and listening to books, singing songs, or describing and naming things during daily activities.
Unite for Literacy’s digital library is designed to help families hear the words in the books, spoken in more than 50 different home languages by native speakers.
Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. Sharing the home language with their child is a lifelong gift. Being bilingual is a superpower!
